"River Ratz" Swim Team
The James "River Ratz" Swim Team encourages all children to join and participate. Age groups run from six-and-under through fifteen-eighteen for girls and boys. Summer swimming begins the week of Memorial Day. Summer swim practice time is 3:30-5:30 p.m. until Newport News City schools recess; thereafter practice is held in the morning. Morning practice is divided into two parts running from 8:00-9:30 a.m. and 9:30-11:00 a.m on weekdays, with practice times assigned on the basis of age and ability. There are no weekend swim practices.
The "River Ratz" compete in six swim meets during the season and qualifying swimmers will participate in a City Meet which is usually held the end of July. The season comes to an end with an elegant banquet. However, the team has more to offer than competitions! Throughout the season the team enjoys miniature golf, pizza parties, club dinners and the year-end banquet.
In addition to our swimming pools, our beach is used for social events as well as boating activities. Small sailboats may be placed on the beach, along with jet skis. Motor boats may be docked at the pier.
